Questions
Refunds, answered.
When will I get my federal tax refund?
The IRS issues most refunds for e-filed returns within 21 days of accepting the return, and direct deposit is the fastest way to receive it. Paper returns take considerably longer. Some returns are held for extra review, which adds time.
How do I check my federal refund status?
Use the IRS "Where's My Refund?" tool linked on this page. You will need your SSN or ITIN, your filing status and the exact refund amount shown on your return. Status is usually available about 24 hours after an e-filed return is accepted and updates once a day, overnight.
How do I check my state refund?
Each state runs its own refund lookup and its own timeline, which can differ a lot from the IRS. Use the state lookup link on this page to find your state's official tool.
Why is my refund smaller than I expected?
The IRS can adjust a refund to correct a calculation, or reduce it to pay certain past-due debts such as back taxes or child support. When that happens a notice explains the change — send it to us and we will check that the adjustment is right.
I owe tax instead of getting a refund. How do I pay?
You can pay the IRS and most states online — use the official payment links on this page. Pay by the April 15 deadline even if you filed an extension, because an extension gives more time to file, not to pay.
Can Evolv Tax tell me where my return is?
Yes. Your client dashboard shows where your return is — prepared, filed and accepted. Once the IRS has accepted it, the refund itself is tracked with the official IRS and state tools linked here.
