Questions
Good to know.
Who is Evolv Tax for?
Anyone who needs a US tax return done right — with a specialty in visa holders (H-1B, L-1, F-1 and OPT), expats and US–India cross-border filers. Residency status, treaty benefits and foreign-account reporting are exactly where generic tax software goes wrong, and that is where we focus.
Am I a resident or non-resident for tax purposes?
It depends on your visa and the days you were present in the US (the Substantial Presence Test, with exemptions for F-1/J-1 students). We determine your status before anything is filed — getting this right is the difference between a correct return and an over-taxed one.
How does the US–India tax treaty affect my filing?
The treaty can change how your income, standard deduction and certain scholarships are treated, and it helps avoid double taxation. We apply the relevant articles to your situation rather than defaulting to generic software rules.
Do I need to file an FBAR for my Indian accounts?
If your foreign accounts (NRE, NRO, savings and similar) together exceeded $10,000 at any point in the year, an FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) is required — and the penalties for missing it are steep. We file it alongside your return.
How does working with Evolv Tax work?
Register in under a minute, upload your W-2s, 1099s and other documents to the secure client portal, and your dedicated preparer prepares the return after a careful, document-first review. We then e-file it and you can track your federal and state refund through to deposit.
Who actually prepares my return?
A dedicated human preparer — not software and not anonymous seasonal help. Our team includes Enrolled Agents and CPAs with cross-border experience, and every return gets a document-first review before it is filed.
Is Evolv Tax an IRS-authorized e-file provider?
Yes. Evolv Tax is an IRS Authorized e-file Provider, and we file federal returns plus state returns for all 50 states.
Can I work with you from India or outside the US?
Yes. Everything happens online — documents, questions and status updates go through the secure client portal, and you can reach us by email, phone or our WhatsApp line for India.
When is the US tax filing deadline?
For most individuals it is April 15. An extension (Form 4868) gives you until October 15 to file, but any tax owed is still due by April 15 — so filing an extension does not extend the time to pay. We can file the extension and estimate your payment for you.
How long does an ITIN take, and can you help?
ITIN processing typically takes several weeks and requires a paper filing with original or certified documents. We prepare the Form W-7, guide you through the documentation, and file it together with your return.
What documents do I need to get started?
Your W-2s and any 1099s, Form 1042-S if you received one, your passport and visa details with your US entry and exit dates, last year's return if you have it, and year-end balances of any foreign bank accounts for the FBAR. Not sure about something? Upload what you have — your preparer will tell you exactly what is missing.
I am an F-1 student with no US income. Do I still need to file anything?
Usually yes. Non-resident F-1 and J-1 students generally need to file Form 8843 each year to support their exemption from the Substantial Presence Test, even with no income at all. We will tell you exactly what applies to you.
